Click "Update Driver," then select "Browse my computer for driver software." Next, click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer," and uncheck "Show compatible hardware." Pick Apple Inc. Open Device Manager, and find the device under "Human Interface Devices." Right click and select Properties.
Ultimately, the solution was simple: just use Device Manager's driver menu to force installation of the Apple Display driver.

I installed Windows 8.1 using Boot Camp today and ran into a problem - the external display was connecting and showed up as an "unknown device" called "Studio Display," but wasn't functioning as a monitor. I'm probably in the extreme minority, in that I'm using the biggest of the old ADC-based Apple Cinema Displays, which requires daisy-chaining multiple adapters (ADC-DVI, then DVI-Thunderbolt), but works.
